Description

The building was originally constructed in 1935 and had several different uses prior to becoming a theater. It was originally an auction house and later the Alpine Lodge restaurant. From at least 1958 to 1964 it was the offices of the Mary Webb Davis Modeling School, during which time the facade was also used to represent the private detective agency in the hit television series 77 Sunset Strip. In 1966 it was converted into a 400 seat cinema called the Tiffany Theatre. The Rocky Horror Picture Show began playing on weekends beginning 10 Jun 1977, and it was here that the now famous audience participation format was pioneered. The theater was split into two 99-seat performance theaters in 1985 - known as the North and South Stages.
