The original Festival Stage was built in consequence of the primary Old Globe Theatre being destroyed by fire in 1978 and was built in just 52 weeks in order to continue the season. The outdoor venue was so popular that it remained until 1984 when it was also destroyed by arson. It was rebuilt, opening in 1985.
