Description
The first theater here was built in 1782 by architects Marie-Joseph Peyre and Charles de Wailly. It housed the prestigious Comédie-Française. The first theater was destroyed in a fire in 1799. It was reconstructed under architect Jean Chalgrin and reopened in 1808. A second fire in 1818 destroyed the theater. Both fires completely gutted the interior and roof, though some portions of the original 18th century facade still survive.
