The first theater on this site was designed by Sir John Vanbrugh and destroyed by fire in 1789. The second was built in 1791, designed by Michael Novosielski and destroyed in 1867 by fire. The third was built in 1869 within the shell of the 1791 structure. This building was demolished in 1892 after severe structural disrepair and financial unviability. The current theater was built in 1897.
