As the Geary Theater, this venue was the home of the American Conservatory Theater from 1967. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and designated an official landmark of San Francisco in 1976. It was greatly damanged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and closed while undergoing extensive seismic retrofitting and repaires. The theater reopened in 1996 and was renamed the Toni Rembe Theater in 2002, a longtime A.C.T. board member.
