On Jan 3, 1962, producer Ketti Frings mentioned in an interview that off-Broadway houses were all taken. That her three stars for The Umbrealla - Geraldine Page, Anthony Franciosa, and Franchot Tone - "are studying their lines in a catering hall we rented" This production originally starred Franchot Tone as Cornelius V. Stolts. In early January he was a guest star in "A Memory of Candy Stripes", an episode of the television series Ben Casey. This was noted in some papers as a "comeback" performance and by Jan 5 there were notices "now Otto Preminger has recalled him to play the President of the US in his film Advise and Consent". On Jan 10 Franchot's name appeared on ads for The Umbrealla for the last time and on Jan 11 he was replaced on ads by Arthur O'Connell. Due to the last minute casting change, the first performance date was pushed back from Jan 18 to Jan 20.
