Brief Description

Synopsis: Bye Bye Birdie follows Albert Peterson, the manager and songwriter for the famous singer and heartthrob, Conrad Birdie. When Conrad is drafted into the Army, his fans are devasated and Albert is facing an uncertain financial future. Albert and his fiery longtime girlfriend, Rosie Alvarez, work together and craft a publicity stunt to secure their finances. They end up writing a song to be performed by Conrad on television for one lucky fan, who will also receive a "farewell kiss", and their scheme works. Meanwhile, in the small town of Sweet Apple, Ohio, young woman Kim MacAfee finds out she has been chosen as the lucky girl to give Conrad a goodbye kiss. As Kim and her friends prepare for Conrad's arrival, she also has to face the wrath of her jealous boyfriend, Hugo Peabody, setting the stage for comic chaos Originally titled Let's Go Steady, it is set in 1958. The book was influenced by Elvis Presley being drafted into the US Army in 1957. The rock star character's name, Conrad Birdie, is word play on the name Conway Twitty. Twitty later had a long career as a country music star but, in the late 1950s, he was one of Presley's rock 'n roll rivals.
